Columbus Regional Health has received the Platinum Performance Achievement Award and Chest Pain Center Accreditation with Primary PCI and Resuscitation from the American College of Cardiology (ACC). This recognition highlights the hospital’s commitment to high standards in treating patients with chest pain, particularly those experiencing heart attacks.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 800,000 Americans experience a heart attack each year. While chest pain or discomfort is the most common symptom for both men and women, women are more likely to have symptoms that differ from the typical presentation. Other signs can include discomfort in other parts of the body, shortness of breath, cold sweat, unusual tiredness, nausea, dizziness, or fainting.
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as coronary angioplasty, is a non-surgical method used to open narrowed or blocked arteries. This procedure helps relieve symptoms of heart disease and reduce damage during or after a heart attack.
Hospitals that receive ACC Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI and Resuscitation Accreditation must demonstrate consistent ability to treat patients with heart attack symptoms at any time of day. They must follow strict protocols for chest pain care and maintain specialized programs such as hypothermia treatment after cardiac arrest. Accredited facilities assemble dedicated teams focused on patient education and improved outcomes.
The ACC serves over 52,000 members worldwide as a leading organization in cardiovascular care. Its activities include credentialing professionals who meet high qualifications, setting health policy standards, providing medical education opportunities, sharing research through its JACC Journals series, running national registries for quality improvement purposes, and accrediting hospitals in cardiovascular care.
