The UNC School of Law is providing pro bono legal services to nonprofits that are facing challenges as a result of COVID-19.

The services are offered through the COVID-19 Response Summer Project, The Daily Tar Heel reported on June 3, which is slated last until the middle of July.

A professor with the school, Thomas Kelley, said it’s necessary to support nonprofits during the pandemic.

“While the nonprofit organizations are being asked to do more, they’re also seeing their revenues drying up," Kelley told The Daily Tar Heel. "People are stressed, people are not able to donate to them and so forth.”

The individuals offering the services are made up of a digital sector of law students who have were certified via the North Carolina bar to practice law as students, The Daily Tar Heel reported. Kelley will oversee their conduct as perform interviews as well as direction for various issues.

“There’s great demand for legal services, partly helping nonprofit organizations get access to federal relief funds under the CARES Act,” Kelley told The Daily Tar Heel. “For some nonprofit organizations, they are in such crisis mode, they haven’t even been able to pick up the phone to call us or anyone else for help.”
