City of Whiteville issued the following announcement on June 24.

Whiteville firefighters welcomed a new addition to the fire station on Columbus Street Thursday.

A new Pierce fire engine was unveiled Thursday morning. When the new truck is in service, it will replace the 32-year-old Engine 3, which is no longer fit for service.

The truck was driven to Whiteville from the dealer in Appleton, Wisconsin. Chief David Yergeau said it’s standard procedure to drive a new apparatus home, rather than shipping the equipment.

Yergeau has been seeking approval from the city council for a replacement truck for several years. The city will have invested roughly $725,000-$730,000 in truck and associated equipment.

The engine will have no impact on the city’s ISO rating, Yergeau said.

“This keeps the current rating from dropping,” Yergeau said. “Our goal is to get to an ISO 3.  We’re required for the rating we have now to have three engines and a ladder truck.  Really, with the 32-year-old engine out of service, only had two engines and a ladder.  This keeps us up to minimal standards for the rating we have now.”

The new engine not in service yet, Yergeau said.  He anticipates that all the equipment will be installed and the truck will be ready for service in approximately a month.

Whiteville Fire Department took delivery of its new engine last week. The truck replaces a 32-year-old engine that will be removed from service.
