City of Whiteville recently issued the following announcement.
Whiteville Police Sgt. Jose Garcia
• Name: Jose Garcia
• Age: 33
• Rank/position: Sergeant, patrol division
• Hometown, high school, and college: Brownsville Tx., Lumberton High School, Bladen Community College (BLET).
• Years in law enforcement/years with current department: Seven years with Whiteville Police Dept., five years with N.C. Department of Corrections.
• Family: I live in Robeson County with my 11-year-old daughter Jocelyn and my girlfriend Noemi.
• What are the attributes of a top-notch officer? Compassionate, communication skills, integrity, honesty, truthful, trustworthy, caring, team player.
• Do you have a guiding principle or mantra about policing? Teamwork, watch each other’s backs.
• Reason you got into law enforcement: To protect and serve our community, to make it safe for our kids to grow up in.
• What do you find most rewarding about the job? When justice is served.
• What are the most challenging aspects of the job? Biggest challenge of being a police officer is that we never know what our day is going to consist of. Every shift is different. It can go from 0-100 in 2-1/2 seconds. We can never let our guard down. We have to stay alert at all times.
• What advice would you give citizens about safety? Don’t Drink And Drive !!!
• Hobbies away from policing? Car washing, detailing cars. I also work part time at Advance Auto Parts (eight years).
• Most unusual or challenging call to date? Responding and apprehending bank robbery suspect in the parking lot of First Bank in February 2019.
