May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Mental health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.  There is a stigma surrounding mental health and treatment.  Individuals experiencing mental health concerns may fear discussing symptoms or seeking help for their mental health.  They may fear judgement and backlash from family, friends, or even their employer.  According to the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, the average delay between symptom onset and treatment for mental illness is 11 years.  Would you go 11 years with a headache before seeking a doctor's treatment?

It is important to change the stigma surrounding mental health.  If you suspect a loved one is struggling with mental health, talk to them and encourage them to seek professional help.  If you are struggling with your mental health, talk to a trusted person and/or a professional.  You deserve to be healthy, both physically and mentally.

If you or a family member are experiencing a mental health crisis and you reside in Columbus County, either call 911 or call Integrated Family Services PLLC Mobile Crisis Team at 1-866-437-1821.
