Scotland County Black History
Reverend Johnie Wesley Gorham was the first African-American to become Mayor of the town of Wagram. Gorham was elected to the post in 1991 by securing 71 percent of the votes.
One of Gorham’s biggest accomplishments was securing a $600,000 Development Block Grant for Wagram, the largest in the town’s history.
