Scotland County Black History

James Arthur Harrison was born on July 12, 1929, the youngest son of Minner and Lucius Harrison. James Arthur was born in Hasty on the Gilbert Jones Farm, one of the first black families to have electric lights.

In 1950, James married Eva McCollum. A few years later, James acquired a job working for John F. McNair in the fertilizer plant. Later, he started working for the McNairs in their tractor shop.

In 1968, James and Eva began working for Springs Mills, later known as Westpoint Stevens. With a new job, came new training. James served as the maintenance mechanic until he retired in 1993. Eva retired from the plant in 1995.

The couple became one of the first black families to own a mobile home park. The mobile home park was located on Barnes Bridge Road and was known as the Harrison Mobile Home Park.
