Scotland County Black History
Coppin Harold (Bee) Morris Jr. was born on February 22, 1905, in Columbia, SC. His father, Joseph H.W. Morris, was the first president of Allen University in Columbia.
Morris attended high school in Columbia and received his collegiate education at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Morris’ professional degree was earned at the Gupton Jones School of Mortuary Science.
Morris came to Laurinburg in the 1930s to begin his professional career as a licensed embalmer and funeral director. In the 1950s, Morris opened a second funeral home in Red Springs.
Morris was greatly interested in community activities and served as a trustee of Bright Hopewell Baptist Church, first president of the Scotland County branch of the NAACP, and vice chairman of the building fund for the original Scotland Memorial Hospital. As a vibrant spokesperson, Mr. Morris was also the first chairman of the Laurinburg Bi-racial Committee.
In other community service, Morris was co-chairman of the drive to fund the building of the Scotland Memorial Library. Morris also served as vice-chairman of the Laurinburg Housing Authority.
Morris died on December 15, 1973, leaving a legacy of humanitarianism, love, leadership, and devotion to his community.
