Scotland County Women’s History

Hazel Frances was born in 1932 in nearby Maxton. She was the daughter of Mary Julia Fairley and Clarence Frances. Hazel was an educator and taught in Scotland County Schools for 30 years. She was dedicated to teaching and wrote her own science and math workbooks. Hazel retired in 1982 but still remained active in teachers’ groups.

Later in life, Hazel became the first woman to be president of the State Baptist Sunday School Convention.
