Columbus County issued the following announcement on Jan. 20.
Columbus County is under an Ice Storm Warning and likely receive 0.20 to 0.30 inches of freezing rain beginning in the early morning hours of Friday, January 21, according to the National Weather Service. Wind may gust up to 25 mph.
Effects:
Road conditions will be extremely hazardous through the weekend. Travel is strongly discouraged. Scattered to numerous power outages and tree damage will occur.
Prepare:
Please prepare to shelter in place. The county will not open shelters for this event due to the inability to heat the shelters without power and COVID 19. Please prepare for your medical needs such as having a backup supply of oxygen if needed and masks. Remember your outdoor pets during the weekend due to continuous, below freezing temperatures. Caution:
Please take care if you are experiencing a power outage. Be cautious when using generators and alternative heating methods to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators should not be operated inside a home.

County Offices will be closed Friday, January 21, 2022.
Columbus County Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball Program at area gyms is cancelled for Saturday, January 22, 2022.
Trash pickup for Friday and Saturday, January 21-22, 2022, will not occur.
